What are Teal Sapphires

Teal sapphires are a relatively new entrance into the sapphire market. While the premium colours such as blues and pinks getting expensive, historically marginalised sapphire varieties such as teal sapphires emerged as alternative beauties.

Are Teal Sapphires Valuable?

Any good size sapphire with great clarity is valuable despite the colour. However, given all other properties are equal, and purely judging by the colour, teal sapphires are relatively cheaper than many other varieties. Teal sapphires are mined in several regions of the world including Australia and Madagascar. Madagascar stones have better colour and lustre than the real sapphires found in other regions. The majority of teal sapphires found in Australia are not great in clarity. They would be very photogenic due to the fact that they are not as transparent as a clear light-coloured sapphire, but in reality, they tend to be duller and less saturated. However, if you love teal as a colour as we do, teal will be the top choice for your engagement ring.

What to look for in a top-quality Teal Sapphire?

A good teal sapphire would have an ideal mix of equal amounts of blue and green so that it may not classify nigher as a blue sapphire or a green sapphire. This should be a seamless mix of blue and green without forming any colour zones. Teal sapphires should be distinguished from bi-colour sapphires or party sapphires where the different colours are dominant in different parts of the gemstone.

Naturally, teal is a less saturated colour. But still, a higher saturation of teal would be better than low-saturated dull-looking stones. Saturation is a very important colour quality of sapphires and you can learn more about sapphire colour saturation here.

Why Teal Sapphires are getting popular

The main reason why teal sapphires are getting popular is the increase in supply. Australia produces large quantities of natural sapphire but a significantly large portion of those are not gem-quality sapphires and are used in other industrial applications. The gem quality sapphires mined in Australia and Madagascar have increased during the last few years.

Due to the increase in prices of premium colours, jewellers shifted to teal sapphires so that they can bring a more affordable sapphire ring to the market. Their marketing campaigns helped teal sapphires to get exposed in many different marketing channels. This popularity forced every sapphire supplier and jeweller to bring their own teal sapphire offerings to the market.

The unanswerable question is whether the teal sapphire trend lasts long or not. With plenty of supply, affordable prices, and embraced by the jewellers, we believe that the teal sapphire trend is here to stay.
