GRS Colour Terms

Many coloured gemstones especially sapphires and rubies come in numerous colours and some of those colours were given specific names and they demand higher value in the trade. However, classifying precious gemstones into these colour groups is a highly subjective decision. GRS, Gemresearch Swiss Lab's colour term guidelines are the most recognised guideline for identifying these uniquely coloured gemstones.

This guideline provides information to correctly identify the GRS-type “ROYAL BLUE” Sapphire, GRS-type “CORNFLOWER” Sapphire, GRS-type “SUNRISE” Padparadscha Sapphire, GRS-type “SUNSET” Padparadscha Sapphire, GRS-type “PIGEON BLOOD” Ruby, and a few other gemstones. (download)

Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee

This committee is a result of an effort to harmonise the standards of issuing gemstone certificates across the globe. Different laboratories have their own terminology and definition in their certification and this aims at having a unified approach to gemstone certification.
