Diamond Shape Vs Cut

When it comes to diamond it should always match to wearers personal style and personality. Generally, when selecting a diamond the first most priority should be the shape. As I was earlier talking about the cut and here again shape you may be doubting between these words SHAPE and CUT. It’s common these two properties which are often confused. First, we’ll see what does shape means and how does it differ from the cut? Generally speaking, the diamond shape refers to the outline shape of the diamond. The most recognized shapes are round, princess, emerald, Asscher, cushion, radiant, pear, oval, marquise and heart. Each diamond shape has its specifications and therefore each shape has different fire and brilliance. So now you are clear that diamond shape is overall geometry or form of the diamond. Generally, round shapes consider as classic while princess shape referring to the feminine and emerald is all about glamorous. Asscher shape is more suitable for those who in love with vintage styles, those who are more romantic go for cushion shape.

Brilliant cut Diamonds are the perfect diamonds

The diamond cut is all about proportions, symmetry and polish of the diamond. So if you consider a particular diamond shape, there could be several diamond cuts which come under the same diamond shape. For a better understanding lets consider round diamonds. As you are interested in diamonds it’s not a secret for you that round cut diamonds are the iconic diamond shape which is the most expensive and most popular. For hundreds of years, it has been the symbol of millions of romantic relationships. The current market 75% of diamond sales are represented by round brilliant cut. So these round brilliant cut and Old European Cut, Rose Cut Diamonds all come under the round shape. Rose-cut reminds the shape of rosebud as they are flat at the bottom and presenting a larger surface for enhancing the brilliance of the diamond. Compared to round brilliant cut these rose cuts lack a pavilion. When it comes to round brilliant cut it has circular girdles and 58 facets where rose cuts could hold 3 and 24 facets. If you consider the other round shape old European cut it is more likely to features deeper cut proportions compared to round brilliant cut and therefore they appear thicker than the modern brilliant-cut diamonds. The crown of the old European cut is higher than the brilliant-cut. So I hope that now you are much more clear on the idea behind the diamond shape and the cut.

Diamond GIA 4Cs Cut

Out of all features diamond cut is the most important characteristic influence to the allure & beauty of a diamond. In generally the diamond cut is referring to the geometrical features of the diamond specifically the symmetry, proportioning and polish of a diamond. So if these factors are not at its standards then the luminous of such diamonds are very less and looks dull. The symmetry of a diamond describes how each facet of the diamond are aligned and intersects each other while the proportioning refers to the all other geometrical facts such as length, width and height, depth, girdle thickness and crown angle, etc… But when it subject to the diamonds there is another aspect of diamond cut which comes under the GIA standards. If you don’t know simply GIA representing the Gemological Institute of America. To ensure that you are getting a real perfect diamond we always advise you to buy GIA certified diamonds. This institute introduces standards to judge the diamonds for the very first time and we called it 4C’s of diamond quality. In GIA specifications we refer the cut quality and it defines the fire, sparkle and brilliance of a particular diamond. It is the only $C which s a result of human input. As other 3C’s are colour, clarity and the carat which gain naturally. If a diamond cut is perfect then it is capable of performing its full potential for fire and brilliance. In GIA standards the cut quality is graded in scale poor to excellent. Technically this scale measures range of proportion sets and face-up ts appearances. Diamonds could have different proportion sets and therefore the attractiveness of each diamond is quite different. Diamond’s proportion representing the relationships between table pavilion depth, crown angle and the table size. If this is in perfect combination then it creates great diamonds which are more sparkling as it was more capable of taking in and reflecting the lights.

Evaluate the diamond cut with GIA

How GIA evaluates the diamond cut?

When you are referring GIA certification you could find that the cut quality lies in the range of Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor. As GIA indicated the diamond quality is evaluated considering three main facts as follows. The first point is the diamond’s face-up appearance. Simply how the diamond looks when you viewed it from above. As we are not technical people you and me always talking about the dazzling or the sparkling of a diamond. But there is a lot more in-depth. The tech guys refer the brightness in means of how much light is reflected your eyes from a diamond. And when you expose a diamond to the light you will see a coloured sparkle just like all colours of the rainbow, it is called the fire of a diamond. Finally, you may have seen the white and dark areas caused by reflection when the diamond is viewed in light motion. This is actually what we called as sparkle. Secondly, GIA considered how well the diamond was designed to ensure durability and optimal weight when crafting and finally the quality of the workmanship or craftsmanship that went into aligning and polishing the diamond’s facets.

How are diamonds cut and polished from rough stones

The diamond cutting process is extremely difficult and it requires specialized knowledge and specified tools and equipment. When diamonds are plucked from the mines they are not perfect as we have seen them on our jewellery. Usually, diamonds are cut using diamond blades or else the tools which having diamond-dusted edges. Before initializing the diamond cut process cutters evaluates the diamond by its carat weight and the AKA flaws. There are 5 steps of the diamond cutting process.

Planning

In this stage, cutter decides the perfect shapes to cut the stone to minimize the wastage and maximize the output of the rough diamond. Nowadays computer software is using to develop the 3 D models of the final cut diamond to make it easier for cuter to achieve the final goal.

Cleaving or Sawing

In this step, the rough diamond is split into separate pieces. To keep diamond in tip-top shape the crafters using contactless lasers and years of experience need to complete this step perfectly.

Bruting

This is one of the most interesting parts of the whole process as it converts the rough diamond piece into our favourite diamond shape such as round, oval, emerald and so on. This is also known as girdling. If machines were used in this step we called it cutting and if it's done by hand it says bruting.

Polishing

Diamond polishing is not easier as we polishing our jewellery pieces with a piece of cloth. It’s a more technical and complex process. First, it creates the pavilion, crown, facets and culet for the diamond. Then it starts the next stage a brilliant ring. Her using an arm of a rotating polishing wheel coated with abrasive powder mostly the diamond powder is used. This diamond powder smoothes the diamond when it is pressed against the wheel.

Inspection

As the final step of diamond cutting here the diamond is cleaned with specified acid and check to ensures that whether the diamond has meets its pre-decided specification throughout the process.

Characteristics and nomenclature of the brilliant-cut

Now you know that most defining feature of a diamond is its cut. When a diamond is cut with numerous facets to achieve exceptional brilliance we usually called it brilliant cut. This brilliant-cut ensures that it maximize light reflection which comes through the top of the diamond. To achieve this a brilliant-cut diamond is crafted in such a way having s 58 facets and out of the 33 are above the girdle. So 25 facets lie below the girdle. This brilliant-cut is firstly introduced by Venetian gem-cutter Vicenti Peruzzi at the end of the 17th century. Due to the perfectly symmetrical cut, brilliant-cut diamonds reflect light equally from within its facets. When considering the specifications a brilliant-cut diamond the upper part of the diamond has 1 table facet, 8 bezel facets, 8-star facets. Also the cone shape of the diamond capable of maximizing the light refraction through the top of the diamond.
